Washington — President Trump on Monday defended his decision to post an AI-generated image appearing to depict him in the likeness of Jesus, insisting the image shows him as a “doctor.”
The post on Sunday night sparked intense backlash, even from some of the president’s most vocal supporters, and the image was deleted from the president’s Truth Social account by Monday morning.
“I did post it, and I thought it was me as a doctor,” the president told reporters in an impromptu press conference outside the Oval Office. “And it had to do with Red Cross. There’s a Red Cross worker there, which we support. And only the fake news could come up with that one.”
He continued: “So I — I just heard about it. And I said, ‘How did they come up with that?’ It’s supposed to be me as a doctor, making people better, and I do make people better.”
The image, a slightly altered version of one posted months ago by right-wing influencer Nick Adams, shows the president in a white robe and red sash with a ball of light in one hand and the other hand extended in healing. The president’s post was interpreted as sacrilegious even by those who usually support him.
Asked why took down the photo, Mr. Trump told CBS News senior correspondent Norah O’Donnell, “Normally I don’t like doing that, but I didn’t want to have anybody be confused. People were confused.”

The post came on Orthodox Easter, exactly one week after other Christians in the U.S. and around the world celebrated Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday.
“Why? Seriously, I cannot understand why he’d post this,” responded Riley Gaines, the conservative activist who has been the administration’s voice on the topic of transgender athletes in women’s sports. “Is he looking for a response? Does he actually think this? Either way, two things are true. 1) a little humility would serve him well 2) God shall not be mocked.”
“Blasphemy from the Oval Office is not a funny troll,” conservative media figure Cam Higby posted to X.
“I assume someone has already told him, but it behooves the president both spiritually and politically to delete the picture, no matter the intent,” wrote conservative author and podcaster Michael Knowles.
“I know he’s trying to be funny, but it was a foolish post,” said GOP Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska, who has been a critic of some of the president’s policies. “I saw a lot of Republicans commenting in it last night. Some saying he’s just trolling, and others saying it’s anti-Christian. When you divide your own party it is self destructive. To me it was a gaudy and juvenile post.”
“It’s inappropriate and embarrassing. It’s offensive,” wrote Ari Fleischer, a Fox News contributor and former White House press secretary in the George W. Bush administration.
Former Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has become increasingly critical of the president after leaving office, wrote on X: “On Orthodox Easter, President Trump attacked the Pope because the Pope is rightly against Trump’s war in Iran and then he posted this picture of himself as if he is replacing Jesus. This comes after last week’s post of his evil tirade on Easter and then threatening to kill an entire civilization. I completely denounce this and I’m praying against it!!!”

She added: “That image is what happens when Paula White is your personal pastor and people around you are continually comparing you to Christ. Trump desperately needs to understand the bad news that precedes the Good News: you are a helpless sinner in desperate need of a Savior, as we all once were.”
“The media is paying attention to podcastistan breaking with Trump over Iran,” conservative podcaster Erick Erickson wrote on X. “What they really should be paying attention to are the Christian Trump supporters who have stood with him through Iran, who are waking up to his blasphemy.”
When O’Donnell asked Mr. Trump in a phone interview whether he took the post down because of Gaines’ and others’ criticism, the president said no. “I didn’t listen to Riley Gaines. I’m not a big fan of Riley, actually,” he said.
The president’s post came shortly after another post in which he lashed out against Pope Leo XIV, who has been critical of the United States’ war efforts in Iran.
“I will not shy away from announcing the message of the Gospel,” the pope said in response. “Of inviting all people to look for ways of building bridges for peace and reconciliation, of looking for ways to avoid war anytime that’s possible.”
When Adams initially posted the image of Mr. Trump, he wrote: “America has been sick for a long time. President Trump is healing this nation.” Mr. Trump in March selected Adams to serve as special presidential envoy for American tourism, exceptionalism and values.

A social media backlash wasn’t enough to persuade President Donald Trump to apologize or back down from his feud with Pope Leo.
But he did remove the AI-generated image he posted of himself as a Christ-like figure, after some of his most ardent Christian supporters accused him of blasphemy.
“I don’t know if the President thought he was being funny or if he is under the influence of some substance or what possible explanation he could have for this OUTRAGEOUS blasphemy,” Megan Basham, a prominent conservative Protestant Christian writer and commentator, posted on X. “But he needs to take this down immediately and ask for forgiveness from the American people and then from God.”
Even some in the right-wing media sphere were aghast.
“I support Trump, and I spend 8 hours a day defending him. I will not defend blasphemy,” conservative political commentator Cam Higby posted on X, urging the president to take the post down.
The image depicted Trump in a white robe with a red sash, with one hand on the forehead of a bedridden man. An orb of light floats in the president’s other hand, along with an American flag and the Statue of Liberty in the background.
The response was swift.
“Why?” Riley Gaines, the former collegiate swimmer turned conservative podcaster who has led the charge against trans women in sports, posted. “Seriously, I cannot understand why he’d post this. Is he looking for a response? Does he actually think this?”
Gaines wrote that “a little humility would serve him well,” before concluding, “God shall not be mocked.”
Trump confirmed on Monday that he personally put up the image but insisted he thought it portrayed him as a doctor “making people better.”
“Only the fake news could come up with that one, so I just heard about it, and I said, ‘How did they come up with that?’” Trump said. “It’s supposed to be me as a doctor.”
In an interview with CBS News on Monday, Trump expanded on why he took down the post.
“Normally I don’t like doing that, but I didn’t want to have anybody be confused,” he said. “People were confused.”
Trump denied being swayed by the criticism, saying he “didn’t listen to Riley Gaines” and that he’s “not a big fan.”
The White House has not responded to questions about the post. But it vanished on the same day that the Religious Liberty Commission, a body Trump set up to ostensibly defend religious freedom, was scheduled to meet.
The offending post appeared online shortly after Trump went after Pope Leo, who has been critical of the war on Iran.
“I’m not a big fan of Pope Leo,” he wrote in a Truth Social post that called the leader of the Roman Catholic Church “WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.” Leo, the first American pope, later responded he has “no fear of the Trump administration.”
David Gibson, who is director of the Center on Religion and Culture at Fordham University in New York City, said Trump’s attack on Pope Leo “makes zero sense politically.”

“American presidents, and American Catholics, have often disagreed with the popes, not just with Leo,” Gibson said. “But disrespect like this is different from disagreement. This is uncharted territory.”
In r/catholicism, a Reddit community dedicated to the Christian denomination, moderators created a “megathread“ to corral the discussion on the recent spat between the pope and the president. The thread had more than 1,500 comments as of Monday afternoon, making it one of the most-discussed topics in the 18-year history of the subreddit.
In the CBS interview, Trump said he believes he has “done more for the Catholic Church than any president in the last hundred years.”
Gibson said it’s not gone unnoticed that the post that deeply offended his “key base,” evangelical Christians, is gone, “yet the blast against Pope Leo remains.”
“That is telling, and also complicates the future patch for Trump’s would-be political heirs, JD Vance and Marco Rubio, both Catholics,” Gibson said.
Vance, in particular, has frequently mentioned that he is the first Catholic convert to serve as vice president, and he represented the U.S. last year at Pope Leo’s inaugural mass.
But Trump also risks alienating white evangelicals, a group that continues to strongly back the president but whose support has been slipping of late, recent polls show.
The Trump administration has curried favor with evangelicals by unleashing the Department of Justice to go after what it deems anti-Christian discrimination. Earlier this month, NBC News reported that the Department of Justice was putting the final touches on a report that casts the Biden DOJ as anti-Christian over its enforcement of laws protecting abortion clinics and enforcement of Covid regulations.
Trump and his backers have often reached for religious iconography to defend a president who claims to be a non-denominational Christian but was rarely seen at church until he became president and famously — and wrongly — identified his favorite biblical passage as “Two Corinthians” during a 2016 appearance at Liberty College.
Trump has claimed repeatedly that God “spared him” after two assassination attempts in 2024.
Back in 2019, during his first term as president, Trump described himself as “the chosen one” while fielding a question about the trade war with China. He later said he “was kidding, being sarcastic, and just having fun.”
And over the years, supporters have compared Trump to biblical figures like King David, calling him a flawed figure chosen by God to lead the country.
Trump has even been compared to the king of a land that the U.S. is currently at war with — Iran.
Lance Wallnau, a conservative evangelical Christian preacher in Dallas, said he has in sermons called Trump the modern version of Cyrus, who ruled ancient Persia some 600 years before Jesus was born.
“Thus says the Lord to Cyrus, whom I’ve anointed,” Wallnau told his flock. “Donald Trump has an anointing upon him. The hand of God is on him.”

Is Lucifer Satan? Does the fall of Lucifer describe Satan?
There is no verse in the Bible that says, “Lucifer is Satan,” but an examination of several passages reveals that Lucifer can be none other than Satan. The fall of Lucifer described in Isaiah 14:12 is likely the same that Jesus referred to in Luke 10:18: “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.” A similar fall is depicted in Ezekiel 28.
Isaiah 14:12–18 describes the fall from heaven of one called “Lucifer,” a name that means “morning star,” “son of the dawn,” “Day Star / Daystar,” or “shining star.” The description of the one referred to shows us it can be none other than Satan. We know from Jesus’ own words in Luke 10 that Satan fell from heaven. So, when Isaiah refers to Lucifer (In Hebrew, helel) being cast down to earth (Isaiah 14:12), it can be none other than Satan. The reason for his fall is found in verses 13 and 14: “You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’” This has always been Satan’s desire—to be God—and it is the very temptation he used in the garden of Eden to get Eve to disobey God: “You shall be as God” (Genesis 3:5).
Ezekiel 28 is another passage thought to refer to Lucifer/Satan. Although it begins with Ezekiel being commanded by God to “take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre” (v. 12), an evil idolatrous king, it soon becomes clear that the passage is referring as well to the power behind that king—Satan. Verse 13 says he was “in Eden, the garden of God.” Clearly, the king of Tyre was never in Eden. Verse 14 says, “You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you.” Apparently, Lucifer/Satan had a position of guardian angel in heaven “among the fiery stones,” thought to be the shining precious jewels that are seen in other descriptions of heaven (Exodus 24:10; Revelation 21:18–21). Since the king of Tyre was never in heaven, either, this can only be describing Lucifer. The rest of the passage describes the reason he was cast out of heaven. Because of his beauty, his heart became proud and his wisdom was corrupted (Ezekiel 28:17). Pride in his perfection, wisdom, and beauty (v. 12) became the source of his downfall, and God threw him to the earth (v. 17). This was witnessed by the Lord Jesus in heaven before His incarnation (Luke 10:18).
To summarize, Lucifer was cast out of heaven for his sin of pride and his desire to be God. Jesus referred to seeing Satan being cast out of heaven. Therefore, we can conclude that Lucifer and Satan are one and the same.
